This is a canceled 1-cent United States postage stamp issued in 1893 as part of the Columbian Exposition commemorative series, Scott #230. The design, “Columbus in Sight of Land,” is based on William Powell’s 1855 painting depicting Columbus aboard the deck of the Santa Maria. As the lowest denomination in the 16-stamp set, it was primarily used for third-class mail. Issued for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, this stamp marks the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s landing and is a cornerstone of 19th-century U.S. commemorative philately. Lightly mounted with stamp hinge tape, removable without damage.
