This is a 1961 United States 8-cent commemorative postage stamp featuring General John J. Pershing, Scott Catalog No. 1214. Pershing (1860–1948) led the American Expeditionary Force during World War I and was promoted to General of the Armies in 1919 — the highest possible rank in the U.S. Army. The stamp honors his legacy as a military strategist and national hero. Though often mistaken for part of the “Great Americans” series, this issue is technically classified under the Liberty Series and was engraved by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using rotary press methods.
