This stamp honors the Battle of the Wilderness, fought May 5–6, 1864, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, between Union General Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The design features silhouetted artillerymen operating a cannon, with a red “CIVIL WAR CENTENNIAL 1861–1961” box anchoring the theme. Lightly mounted with stamp hinge tape, removable without damage.
