Used 20¢ Touro Synagogue stamp issued August 22, 1982 to honor the oldest standing synagogue building in the United States, dedicated in 1763 and designated a National Historic Site in 1946. Released during the 250th anniversary of George Washington’s birth, the design includes his 1790 quote to the Newport Hebrew Congregation: “To bigotry, no sanction; to persecution, no assistance.” Cancellation markings vary.
