The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (AFEM) is awarded to U.S. Armed Forces personnel who participate in significant military operations, including peacekeeping missions or operations in support of friendly foreign nations. Measuring 1-1/4 inches in diameter and 2-7/8 inches in overall height, this medal features a pinback design for secure attachment.
The obverse side displays an eagle with wings spread, standing on a sword and superimposed on a radiant compass rose, symbolizing readiness and strength. The reverse side features the shield from the U.S. Coat of Arms, flanked by laurel branches and a bullet, with the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
The ribbon includes green, golden yellow, spice brown, black, blue, white, and scarlet stripes, representing the diversity and unity of the Armed Forces. Established by Executive Order 10977 in 1961, this medal honors service in operations after July 1, 1958.
