The Humanitarian Service Medal honors U.S. Armed Forces personnel who participate in military operations of a humanitarian nature. Measuring 1-1/4 inches in diameter and 2-7/8 inches in overall height, this medal features a pinback design for secure attachment.
The obverse side displays an open hand with palm up, symbolizing aid and assistance. The reverse side includes an oak sprig, representing strength and selflessness, along with the inscription "FOR HUMANITARIAN SERVICE" and "UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES."
The ribbon incorporates imperial purple, white, and bluebird stripes, symbolizing self-sacrifice, regeneration, and universal friendship. Established by Executive Order 11965 on January 19, 1977, this medal recognizes participation in humanitarian missions after April 1, 1975.
