The obverse side displays an open hand with palm up, symbolizing aid and assistance. The reverse side includes an oak sprig, representing strength and selflessness, along with the inscription "FOR HUMANITARIAN SERVICE" and "UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES."
The ribbon incorporates imperial purple, white, and bluebird stripes, symbolizing self-sacrifice, regeneration, and universal friendship. Established by Executive Order 11965 on January 19, 1977, this medal recognizes participation in humanitarian missions after April 1, 1975.
