The 56th Infantry Regiment was constituted on May 15, 1917, in the Regular Army and organized on June 16, 1917, at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, from personnel of the 17th Infantry Regiment. During World War I, the regiment was assigned to the 7th Infantry Division and participated in the Meuse-Argonne campaign.
