Dimensions 1-3/8"L x 3/8"H
Acquired from a Military Surplus Store that went out of business
The Coast Guard Commendation Medals (CGCM) is a mid-level award that is bestowed upon a member of the Armed Forces who have distinguished themselves through heroism or meritorious service while serving with the United States Coast Guard. The award was first created in 1947 and was originally issued only as a ribbon. The award is typically only issued to Enlisted personnel and Junior Officers. Since the medal is awarded by operational commanders, the requirements for the medal allows for interpretation.
Additional awards of the medal are displayed with a 5/16th inch gold star device on the ribbon. When the medal is presented for valorous actions, a bronze "V" device is authorized. Specific to the Coast Guard an Operational Distinguishing Device is also authorized in certain circumstances.
