Original commissioned oil painting by Florida artist Fran Hyland, created in the 1980s for a Delta Air Lines retiree after 45 years of service. The artwork depicts the aftermath of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge disaster on May 9, 1980, showing the collapsed span rising from Tampa Bay. A Delta jet appears in the sky as a personalized tribute to the owner’s aviation career. Signed Fran Hyland in the lower right. Canvas measures 36"x24" and is professionally framed to 47"x29". The painting has been kept away from all direct sunlight and outside light sources, preserving its color and condition exceptionally well.
Historical and Artistic Context:
The Subject: The painting vividly captures the immediate aftermath of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge disaster on May 9, 1980. The MV Summit Venture freighter collided with a support pier during a sudden, severe storm. This caused a 1,200-foot span of the southbound bridge to collapse into Tampa Bay.
The Delta Tribute: The addition of the Delta Airlines jet—resembling a classic Boeing 727 or DC-9 from that era—is a wonderful personalized touch. It beautifully bridges a dark moment in Florida's history with our family’s proud personal legacy.
The Artist: Fran Hyland's crisp signature is clearly visible in the turbulent waters. Her composition captures the sheer scale of the severed bridge structure against a vast, calm sky, creating a striking contrast between the mechanical disaster and the peaceful flight above.
