The Southwest Asia Service Medal (SWASM) was established on March 12, 1991, by Executive Order 12754 under President George H.W. Bush. It honors U.S. military personnel who served in Southwest Asia during the Persian Gulf War and related operations between August 2, 1990, and November 30, 1995.
Measuring 1-1/4 inches in diameter and 3 inches in overall height, this medal features a pinback design for secure attachment. The obverse side displays a bronze medallion with a desert landscape, palm trees, and a sunburst, symbolizing the region and the mission. The reverse side includes the inscription "FOR SERVICE IN SOUTHWEST ASIA" and space for engraving.
The ribbon incorporates tan, black, white, red, blue, and green stripes, representing the sand and the coalition countries' national colors.
