The Airman's Medal is awarded to U.S. Air Force personnel for acts of heroism involving voluntary risk of life, not in combat. Established on July 6, 1960, it replaced the Soldier's Medal for Air Force members.
Measuring 1-3/8 inches wide, 1-1/2 inches high, and 3-1/4 inches in overall height, this medal features a pinback design for secure attachment. The obverse side depicts Hermes, the Greek god of courage and boldness, kneeling and releasing an American Bald Eagle into flight, symbolizing freedom and valor. The reverse side includes the inscription "FOR VALOR" within a laurel wreath, with space for engraving the recipient's name.
The ribbon incorporates alternating yellow and ultramarine blue stripes, bordered by Brittany blue edges, representing the Air Force's colors.
